In 1969 a small group of parents at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church started a part-time nursery school program. Starting with one classroom of three-year-olds, a play-based program was designed that would foster the physical, emotional, social and cognitive development of young children. Required parent participation has always been an integral part of the classroom experience.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of St. Mark’s Nursery School, community outreach programs were added to the annual programming activities, like our annual “Getting Ready for Christmas” event and the “Young at Art” festival in the early spring. To celebrate the 20th anniversary, we sought accreditation by the National Association of Young Children (NAEYC) and have maintained our accreditation since 1990. We take pride in receiving special commendations in the area of teacher-child relationships. By the 30th school anniversary a church building renovation allowed programming opportunities for infants and toddlers. The 40th anniversary brought the long-awaited addition of the Kindergarten program.

St. Mark’s Nursery School and Kindergarten currently provides part-time classes for infants, “onesies,” two year olds, preschoolers and kindergarteners (infant - 6 years old). In every classroom you will find two loving, nurturing teachers, as well as one supportive adult volunteer in our 2-5 year old classes. While we value the history of our past, we embrace the children of the future with an understanding that some things never change—the need for companionship, love, safety and acceptance.

* St. Mark’s Nursery School and Kindergarten is a not-for-profit community service offered by St. Mark’s United Methodist Church of Bloomington, Indiana. An advisory committee of parents with currently enrolled children recommends policies for the school. We welcome children of every race, religion, nationality and ability. We do not teach specific religious doctrine but focus on developing caring relationships and the experience of wonder in the world around us.
